Program Learning Objective #6

Demonstrate the interpersonal and engagement skills necessary for effective leaders in a global community or organization.

Collaboration Assignment #1

Professional Assessment Assignment #2

aubree-assignment-2

Rationale:

In the Collaboration assignment 1 we were asked to identify challenges and issues, personal biases affect the role of successful current collaboration. As my scenario didn’t focus globally, it can apply in a global organization. As the director of business development for the largest eye care center in Arizona, it is of great importance that the referring physicians have their patients referred back to them for post op care.  Which is a common complaint from referring doctors; they aren’t seeing their patients for follow up care.  This issue needs a sustainable solution.  I have developed a team to collaborate and create a protocol so these patients will return to the referring doctors after surgery.  We have made great strides but not without challenges.  Through this process I was able to demonstrate skills necessary to lead collaborative efforts. This assignment shows how I helped my team design, implement and engage in a meaningful project.

Professional Assessment Assignment 2 provides an overview of toxic leadership, giving contemporary examples. I showcase my leadership strengths to address toxic behaviors. As leaders, we need to understand how groupthink impacts the organization. Owning mistakes and taking responsibility for actions is part of the foundation for being an ethical leader. In my organization there is a tendency to shift blame in order to deflect the negative attention.

Application:

In both, collaboration assignment 1 and professional assessment assignment 2, I had the opportunity to bring to light my strengths and lead others to engage in the common goal. I found the collaboration course very beneficial in equipping me with tools for working as a team and achieving common goals. The Professional Assessment course learning objectives developed my leadership style and capitalizing on my strengths as a leaders.

Change in Behavior/Future Plan/Perspectives

In addressing challenges, trust has a ripple effect for any relationship.  Unless our team members have trust in each other a project cannot be completed to the best of our abilities.  Our success will depend on colleague’s contribution, support of company’s goals, and an environment where challenges can be resolved in an effective manner.  Development of interpersonal skills is important to implement; commonality to focus on harmony and cooperation, and working together for the good of the group.

I use my leadership styles of transformational and servant to design a method of accountability. I remind my subordinates the importance of the work that they do and that they are truly an asset to the company. To keep my subordinates on the moral, honest path of success, I build a relationships with them, listen to challenges, offers solution, and be supportive. Finally, my integrity, trust and work ethic is the example to follow.

Research, design, develop, and implement a project plan to affect change in an organization.

Artifact:

Final Capstone Project

Rationale:

I chose my final Capstone Project as the artifact to support mastery of the concepts for designing, developing and implementing change in preschool children of Scottsdale Child Care and Learning Center. The project included collaboration with school administration, children and parents. The goal of the project was to increase children’s awareness of easting a rainbow of colors and becoming advocates in nutrition in their community. My leadership skills helped implement the Shirley Unusual Gardening Program into the school system.

Application:

I had many learning opportunities working with Scottsdale Child Care and Learning Center and the stakeholders involved. I met with incredibly talented leaders in the field of nutrition and administration, all sharing a core value of making a difference in the lives of others. I had the opportunity to implement Shirley Unusual from the bottom up as we work to transition the program into other markets looking for school curriculum as it relates to a story and planting seeds.

Change in Behavior/Future Plan/Perspectives:

I have never had the opportunity to co-create a concept and see it out to completion with such valuable results. The ability to empower children to create a lifestyle change is so rewarding. I had the opportunity to work closely with a very talented lady who is looked up to in the field of nutrition. She gave me valuable input on implementation and feedback after my pilot study. I also absorbed feedback from school administrators and parent of the children of what the children learned and messages they brought home. Based on the feedback, we are able to improve the program and look for other opportunities to introduce Shirley Unusual. I will use input as we progress forward to make Shirley Unusual a known program with young children. I have a deeper understanding of how leading children and teachers can develop children who can become nutrition and health advocates within their community.

Collaboration Week 5 Dialogue

Collaboration Week 5 Collaboration

plo-4-artifacts

For our dialogue assignment #2 we were asked to identify a cross cultural challenge of dialogue in our personal, professional life, research three or more article that support that there is an issue, summarize the literature and evaluate options for resolutions. I choose to research the patient demographics for refractive surgery as they have changed from Gen Xers and Baby Boomers to Millennials. Our company is faced with a cross cultural challenge, from our current way of advertising and reaching the population that we know of Gen Xers and Baby Boomers to understanding the Millennials habits, lifestyle and what best speaks to them.

In addition, I chose to provide the Final Assignment in Ethics and Globalization as proof of mastery of the course concepts.  To show my understanding, we were asked to play as an consultant for an American company opening its doors overseas. I provided a management plan including international laws and ethics for change. I developed a plan for Nordstrom opening in the foreign market of,  Abu Dhabi. Globalization ads a layer of complexity. Noting,  Nordstrom will incur a greater risk beyond their control such as, merchandising, marketing, store operations, real estate, human resources, reporting requirements, tax policy.  In light of a new customer they will need to take into account, culture, competition, and environment.  There will also be factors such as; economic uncertainty, political instability, currency fluctuations, and other environmental elements.  I included obstacles and challenges and proposed solutions for each.

I also chose the Dialogue discussion from the Collaboration course to support my mastery of learning. In the week 5 dialogue correspondence I detailed the roles of negotiation and collaboration for resolution conflict, noting Determining the root cause of the problem helps all involved have a better understanding of why the challenge has surfaced. Included was an example of when I had to negotiate something in my personal life.

Week 5 Collaboration question I analyzed the difference between conflict resolution and peacekeeping. I describe how conflict resolution refers to the importance of peacekeeping as a positive communication strategy. Peacekeeping involves psychological change from enemy mentality to a peaceful thought process. The mindset of a peacekeeper is that there are no enemies and work on improving communication with a goal of peaceful reconciliation.

Application:

I was able to distinguish the differences between generations, why and what those differences are.  I attributed the differences to the life cycle effect, period effects and cohort effects.  My finding shine a light on what the Millennials will carry forward throughout their life cycle on what they are like today and what they may be like tomorrow. The Millennials have the desire to make changes and are making it, therefore I understand and communicated internally, what appeals to them and reaching those potential clients through both traditional and new media, resulting in conversion increase in our clinics.

There is common ground in leadership. Effective leadership is dependent on a mix of factors. In my day to day life I am able to apply and understand effective leadership. There is a relationship between the leaders and follower. If leaders are liked and respected they are more likely to have the support of others. If the task is clearly spelled out as to goals, methods and standards of performance then it is more likely that leaders will be able to influence.

Change in Behavior/Future Plan/Perspectives

I have growing my ability to collaborate and lead others, by understanding social dimensions and cultural styles. To create a sense of community, I take in account the balance of organizational culture with local cultural differences.  I look for core values that are universally and shared throughout the organization.  This is important, as culture, boosts employee commitment and loyalty.

Through trial and error, I understand, it is the quality and planning phase of a project that helps make it successful. The level of project planning and fundamentals is important, a well-developed team, integration, a good plan, competitive targets, all correlate to a successful outcome. I am able to connect and Inspire through a shared vision. Being able to articulate a vision gives the employee a feeling of having an important role in the project. By doing this, one is able to create their own vision as part of the organizations future. Clear communication about goals, responsibility, performance, expectations and feedback are valued skills that create team collaboration. I lead with integrity, representing a set of shared values, and behavior consistent with honesty with self and team members. Competence, I am all in. Most of all, trust is an essential element.

Leadership Literacy Week 2 Dialogue

Leadership Literacy Week 3 Dialogue

plo-3-artifacts

Rationale:

In our Professional Assessment Assignment #2, we were asked to define toxic leadership, give three examples of contemporary toxic leadership and the impact their behaviors have and then identify leadership strengths and behaviors to address toxic leadership styles. I was able to articulate my definition of toxic leadership, identify my strengths and personal leadership style, and provide contemporary examples of toxic leadership.

The Leadership Literacy Discussion questions chose to show my mastery of Situational Leadership, Path-Goal theory and Leader Member Exchange Theory. Situational Model as it relates to my CAP project – adds to my thoughts regarding leadership and the intent to empower leadership in children to become peer leaders regarding nutrition.  In the Path Goal Theory – It is up to me to motivate teachers, who then will motivate their students and the ripple effect will continue with the students carrying the leadership of healthy food choices within their circles. Leader Member Exchange – I would say this theory both adds and challenges me in what I am striving to achieve my vision with children and nutrition. This model will be useful to validate any perceptions that I might have of others that I am working with to achieve my vision of children leading the way in nutrition

Application:

The situational leadership model will helps me influence and impact teachers by the curriculum I write and to educate children about nutrition. In order for me to get the high performing results I anticipate, I will need an awareness of my strengths and develop my weaknesses. Having the awareness to treat each follower differently and adapt to each one’s needs will be critical in the success of my project. Each child and each teacher may have different needs.

Change in Behavior/Future Plan/Perspective:

In my organization there is a tendency to shift blame in order to deflect the negative attention. I use my leadership styles of transformational and servant to design a method of accountability.  My subordinates are reminded the importance of the work that they do and that they are truly an asset to the company.  To keep my subordinates on the moral, honest path of success, I build a relationship with them, listen to challenges, offers solution, and be supportive.  Finally, my integrity, trust and work ethic will be the example to follow.I truly always look for the best in everyone and want to trust, but the truth is not everyone is trustworthy.

My CAP project is my passion which means I need to get the best possible results. In order to see this project through to fruition it means designating the right people and developing and boosting success. I reassess goals with team members. Our intention with teachers and children will be, “what will the teachers and children need from us in order to have our vision become a reality?” For everyone to thrive we make sure we promote self-directing coaching styles, have an accepting attitude, clear about intentions, authentic and build trust and enjoy the journey as we walk down the path together of a common goal.

Apply awareness of self and the multi-faceted perspectives of others locally and globally.

Artifacts:

  1. Ethical Framework Assignment

  1. Professional Assessment Assignment 1

assignment-1-week-3

Rationale:

In the Ethical Framework Assignment 1, I showcase my values and personal mission statement. Utilizing the book, Strength Finder and Leadership Practices Inventory, I became more clear of my leadership style both in my personal and professional life. Self-awareness is the first step in becoming an authentic leader. My leadership skills are used daily in my current place of employment as well as in my personal life.

I also chose, Professional Assessment Assignment 1, to support my master of the Program Objective 1. I demonstrated what a virtuous life means to me, how my own sense of  a virtuous life evolves with leadership, and how my conception reflects my identity, personality, goals and aspirations. I focus on my virtues and character development. I examined my virtues and critiqued them as they apply to the real world.

Application:

The assignment helped me become more clear in my current leadership style and how to develop it to make more of a positive impact. I am able to due this as a result of several key assessments and my mission statement. Both of these assignments brought top of mind what I want to leave as my legacy.

Looking at some of my virtues or positive character traits such as discipline, kindness, creativity, trust, gratitude, service, honesty, respect, courage, and forgiveness, I see how I display and evolve a virtuous life according to me.  I am committed to doing the right thing and try to act accordingly to my values and principles.

Change in Behavior/Future Plan/Perspectives:

I had never written about my personal leadership style and these assignments gave me the opportunity to do so. Prior, I found myself leading without intention, just going through the motions. I didn’t realize how this landed on my followers. These assignments brought to the surface what are the characteristics of an effective leaders. I am working on sharing more of myself. I often find when I do, I am able to connect with others more. I often say we are more alike than we are different. I have found this statement to be more true, the more I share myself. I am constantly working on improving my leadership skills by asking others for their input.

Focusing on my virtues and character development, I understand how these surface throughout different situations of my life.  I have the awareness of how these have evolved or failed to evolve into a virtuous life. It isn’t until we drown our self into society that we fall outside our values and become less true to ourselves.  My values and virtues are unique to me.  If I stay true to those and live with integrity and trust, I will live my personal mission statement that leads me to what I would define as a virtuous life based on my ethics.

Ethics and Globalization Assignment 2

PLO 2 Rationale

Rationale:

The above artifacts were chosen to represent my mastery in course materials in Ethical Leadership. In our Ethical Frameworks Final assignment, we were asked to identify and ethical problem, dilemma or scenario (from current events, culture, society politics or the business world where a leadership decision had been made. I designed a PowerPoint providing insight on the ethical decision in Deflate Gate and developed a plan to resolve the problem.

Showing my mastery of Program Leaning Objectives 2, I showed my mastery in Assignment #2 for Ethics and Globalization. I chose a model from our Ethical Framworks course and researched a global organization that has policies in place. I analyzed their policy, compared and contrast. The company I chose was Google. Google/Alphabet employees who lead a virtuous life will carry out their roles in a proficient manner that is consistent with the companies Code of Conduct. As a result of developing a community, they live into the definition of culture. Google employees stress virtue ethics within their Code of Conduct, which stresses the importance of each employees bringing value to the organizations goals.  Google/Alphabet is successful because they advocate virtues that are reality based, non contradictory, integrated in their vision.

The three discussion question I chose asked us to research other religions or traditions. I compared them to ideals and moral reasoning of today. Kant’s philosophy as it relates to egoism is based on the good intentions that count, and not the consequences of ones actions. When choosing actions we may feel that these actions may benefit others. The Fundamentals of Ethics has a great example of egoism and how it relates to Kant’s philosophy

Application:

All of the artifacts allowed me to dig deeper and discover who are fathers of ethics were and to see how their leadership style plays into today’s society. By choosing the artifacts I am able to demonstrate my what I have learned and applied from ethical theories and religious traditions of the past and present. In my current place of employment, I work with a lot of people from different backgrounds and cultures. I have been able to apply my knowledge as I interact with them and understand their response. Recently I have become more patient and understanding with working with a few of our internal surgeons of Indian decent.

Change In Behavior/Future Plan/Perspective:

When researching children and nutrition for my CAP project, I understood ethical dilemmas between school funding, leadership and how this handicaps the children. The plan is best developed with the involvement of school administrators, community leaders, parents, and students. This engagement is critical. It ensures understanding, recognition and support of garden based learning as an appropriate and necessary element of basic education.

I also learned, major global corporations are constantly working to disempower corruptions. In doing so they need to hold a strong ethical leadership styles. Google  understands the role of virtue ethics and how it is directly related to motivate behavior and their success in the common goal.  Employees are encouraged to make decisions that are consistent with the road to excellence which entails using moral judgement that is channeled by virtues of courage, wisdom, temperance, fairness, integrity and consistency.

Through my learning, I understand that I want to be viewed as a ethical leader in personal and work life. Working in healthcare and being involved with my company I am faced daily with ethical dilemmas. Now, I am able to process different actions to more appropriately discuss different actions to produce different outcomes that are ethical.
